Project Name:
Maasai Mammas - Where Water Flows, Opportunity Grows (RAOAF)
Country:
Kenya
Description:
The Maasai Mammas Project is a community-led initiative in Amboseli, Kenya, focused on empowering Maasai women, improving livelihoods, and protecting the environment through secure and reliable access to water. Led by the Rotary Club of Batemans Bay, this first stage will drill and deliver a 100-metre borehole, powered by solar energy, to provide consistent water for more than 1,500 Maasai people, 1,000 livestock, and local wildlife including elephants, lions, and zebras.
Currently, Maasai women and children walk up to 12 kilometers each day to collect water, often waiting for hours at privately controlled boreholes that can close without notice. Project Manager Sharlene Cohen, who has lived and worked closely with the Maasai community, has seen first-hand how this daily struggle impacts health, education, and safety especially for women and children.
The new borehole and solar-pumping system will pipe water directly into four manyattas and to a shared livestock and wildlife trough reducing risk, saving time, and improving hygiene, nutrition, and community and animal wellbeing. The system will be managed by a local Borehole Management Committee, ensuring community ownership and sustainability.
This first stage lays the foundation for a thriving future, one where women lead new enterprises, organic food gardens and tree nurseries grow, and the environment regenerates through care and collaboration. But first, we must bring the water because where water flows, opportunity grows.
